THE EFFECT OF TEACHING SPEAKING BY USING TALKING CHIPS TECHNIQUE TO INCREASE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY

Abstract—This study were to find out the effect of learning English in speaking achievement of students who were taught by using Talking Chips technique. The technique of data collecting was measurement; an oral performance test that requires the students to tell about their daily activities. This methods or techniques which can be used in teaching – learning process especially in speaking skill, as a result, the EFL students’ skill increases and encourage their abilities. The research to find the total score of students’ from their pre-test and posttest. And then, the teacher can see their achievement by students’ total score in pre-test and posttest. The effect of talking chips technique is recommended for the learning process to trigger students’ confident in speaking.

Listening, reading, writing, and speaking are the main skills needed. the requirement to be a student who communicates well is to be able to apply these four skills. To express himself he can use two ways, first is to use written language and another way is with spoken language. English is an international language that is very important in terms of communication. according to Patel & Jain (2008), all knowledge written in many books using English is used as a house of knowledge. Speaking is the main component in a language. Language must be spoken. in interacting we need communication that connects individuals to individuals, individuals to groups and between groups. Talking will connect people around the world. By talking, people can provide their information and ideas to others. Oral communication is based on communication that is not only determined by correct grammar and many vocabularies but also on the correct interactions between segmental and suprasegmental features that make up pronunciation (Marza, 2014: 262).
As a foreign language or a second language, English students usually experience difficulties in mastering it especially in speaking. Almost all English students have difficulty communicating this language. Then Thornbury (2006, as cited in Arsyad, 2014) illustrates that "suppose we play instrumental music, if we practice a lot the more proficient the speaking skills are". Most English students really know that they must always practice many times in their spare time to get good.
Based on the problem, this research tries to apply the Talking Chips technique in teaching speech so that it can help students speak fluently and accurately. Reference [2] shows that the Chips Speaking Technique is a technique in teaching speech that makes students interested in speaking English. This technique will make students more active in speaking in English in class. Then this technique can be used as a cooperative learning method in the classroom. Furthermore, this technique makes students have the opportunity to speak English because in Talking Chips, students are divided into several groups and each group member will have a role to

Talking Chips technique is a strategy to make the speaking classroom activity more active and build the students interesting to learn by dividing the students in the class into some groups and each member in the group will have chance and role to speak. According to Kagan and Kagan (2009), this technique will help students become more aroused to express ideas through their speaking skills. That's because this technique can make students: active in class, learn how to work together in groups and have the opportunity to speak English because students are divided into several groups and each member will have a turn to speak English.
The main point in using talking chips is that the technique is that the teacher must know the application of this technique in class because this technique has several procedures. The procedure in this technique will greatly help active students to speak in class activities. In other words, the teacher's role in applying this technique is very important to get satisfying success both to make students monitored during teaching activities or to get good results in improving students' speaking skills at the end of the application of the technique. One of the most internal factors that influence students’ speaking skill is the students’ intelligence. Intelligence is included in cognitive ability which is very influential and plays important role in the process of teaching and learning. Gardner (1990: 557) states that intelligence is the ability to solve the problems or to develop outcomes and product that are valued in one or more cultural settings.
In conclusion, speaking is the main skill in a language and a way of people conveying the meaningful ideas and information to other people they are talking to. It means of reaching our ideas, feelings, opinions, and philosophies. In teaching activity, the teacher will gain success fulness towards the students when the teachers can know what technique can be appropriate and helpful for the students in the class. Students will never get improvement, and they will not pay more attention to the teacher and lesson when the teacher cannot decide and use the best and suitable technique to be used in the class. Especially in speaking ability, speaking ability is one of the difficult skills in English that the students’ feel difficult to gain improvement. talking chips technique is one of the teaching techniques that can make the students’ speaking skill improve. It can improve students’ speaking ability because when the teachers apply this technique in the class, the students’ are monitored to be active in the class, not only a student that dominates the speaking activity in the class. In addition, this technique forces the students to be active in the speaking activity in the class.
